It depends, how much of the soy face point finger "omg guys it's garry mod!" value do you still want. roughly the original shape should do, Just look at some early concepts for the hl2 grav gun and take from that.

Object manipulator gadget. The gadget has two parts, a handheld gun part, and a backpack. The gun uses a strange blue "string like" beam that glows slightly. The beam is usually stored in the backpack but is connected to the back of the tool, when it is used, the "beam" is fed through the back of the gun out of the front of the gun towards the object meant to be manipulated. Once the object is let go of, the "beam" is retracted back into the backpack.

Here's my unique take. So if had to make a diy phys gun in my house what would i use and with what logic.
So I would use A Blowdryer (looks like a gun) with a overclocked fan and some nubs to control it. and the well known claw in front taken from a claw game. Holding a blue orb of grabing in place.
I imagen the claw contracts as you pull on the trigger as if you are grabing a thing with the force.

Plus you will get your best and last hair drying experience
I do like the boxy look of #16 personally. What I think would be really nice is to have a secondary (side?) screen or a bigger main screen, for tools to be able to show a bit more info about its settings.
