Creating Terrain: Heightmap Setup, World Scale, and Asset Reuse
To add Terrain to your s&box scene, right-click in the Hierarchy and select 3D Object → Terrain. The inspector prompts you to create, import, or link an existing Terrain asset.
Create New Terrain
The terrain asset stores height maps, control maps, and materials. It can be reused across multiple scenes.Settings
- Heightmap Size — Resolution of the heightmap. Higher values increase VRAM usage: 2048x2048 = 24MB, 4096x4096 = 96MB, 8192x8192 = 384MB
- World Scale — Inches per heightmap texel. Smaller scale = more precision but less overall size. 39 inches (~1 meter) is a good default
- Max Height — Maximum terrain height in inches. Higher values reduce precision at lower elevations
Link Existing Terrain
Reuse terrain from another scene by dragging the terrain asset in to auto-create the object, or press "Link Existing" and select an existing Terrain asset.Terrain supports painting materials, sculpting height, and integrating with the clutter system for grass and vegetation placement.
