Screw the fruity stuff and lets be logical, make beats from CCO sources. Who says making beats doesn't pay?

  • Resizable editor panel - drag the top edge of the bottom panel up or down; double-click resets it
  • Resizable piano keyboard - drag the keyboard's top edge to make the keys bigger or smaller; double-click resets it
  • Type exact values - click the number under any knob, or the BPM, octave or velocity, to type a value (Enter applies, Esc cancels)
  • Trim silence at start - right-click option that cuts the empty space before a clip's first note or sound
  • Drop sounds on any editor - the keyboard, piano roll, beat grid, drum pads, audio waveform and Sound & Effects all accept sounds, instruments, kits and riffs
  • Preview buttons - Hear a note, Hear pad and Hear clip play the sound through the track's effects, in Sound & Effects and the Audio Clip tab
  • Hear tweaks - replays the sound automatically each time you turn a knob, so you hear every change
  • Effect Looks - one-click starting points for a track's effects: Clean, Warm, Bright, Punchy, Dark, Lo-fi, Radio, Dreamy, Big room, Pumping
  • Save button on the keyboard strip and beat grid - keep the kit or instrument you're playing as your own
  • Right-click the empty space below the tracks to add a track
  • Import your own sounds - drop WAV, MP3 or OGG files in the import folder and press Import; they're volume-matched and appear in the My Sounds tab
  • My Sounds tab - recordings, imported sounds, sounds you made and sounds received from friends in one place
  • New CC0 sounds - percussion, snares, toms, cymbals and FX
  • 17 drum & percussion loops - rock, funk, boom bap, trap, house, breakbeat, Latin, cajon, cinematic and more, all tempo-synced

  • Virtuosity Studio Kit - a new 16-pad acoustic drum kit
  • 14 snare drums and bone-flute percussion from Karoryfer
  • Make your own kits - Save kit keeps all 16 pads with their volume, pitch, pan, decay, choke and reverse, plus the track's effects; find them under Drum kits > My Kits
  • Make your own instruments - Save instrument keeps a synth or sampled instrument together with its effects, listed under Instruments > My Instruments
  • Make your own sounds - Save as new sound renders a clip, drum pad or instrument note exactly as you hear it, effects included, into My Sounds
  • Rename or delete your own items - right-click anything you made or imported in the browser
  • Import your own MIDI files - put .mid files in the import folder or use the new Import MIDI button; they appear under MIDI > My MIDI
  • Build a song from a MIDI file - double-click a multi-part file to get one track per part, lined up at the file's tempo, with the closest instrument for each part
  • Drum patterns from MIDI - drop a MIDI drum part on a drum track and its kick, snare, hats, toms and cymbals land on the right pads
  • Controller mode - a toggle on the keyboard strip for MIDI keyboards like the Akai MPK Mini via a key-mapper app: Z..I play two octaves, 1 4 8 9 0 A F K play the drum pads, arrow keys change octave and velocity
  • Click to audition - instruments play a note, kits play through their pads, riffs play with your selected track's sound; previews stop when you move away or click something else
  • Drag feedback - while dragging, the target lights up green when it fits or red with the reason, and a hint next to the cursor says what will happen
  • Replace prompt - dropping an instrument or kit on an existing track asks before replacing its sound
  • Share files - save a song plus every custom sound it uses into one .sbshare file to send to friends
  • Share codes - copy a song as a text code a friend can paste in to open it
  • Custom sounds in live sessions - your recordings, imported sounds and sounds you made are sent to friends automatically
  • Host and Join buttons - play with Steam friends without making a party first
  • Session chat - see-through chat window with an unread badge, toggled from the top bar
  • Emotes - pick an emoji from any right-click menu and it floats up on everyone's screen
  • Shared playback - play, stop and seek happen for everyone in the session
  • See each other's mouse - other players' pointers show faintly with their picture and fade when still; toggle next to the player pictures
  • Steam avatars for everyone in the session, plus join, leave and new-host messages
  • Co-op walkthrough - first-time guide where every player clicks Next together, ending with "I'm Ready To Rock!"
  • Single-player tour - 13-step guide to everything on screen that opens on launch until you tick "Don't show this again"; replay it from Help > Take the tour
  • Help screen lists all the new controls
Improved
  • Sound & Effects and Mixer adapt to panel size - knobs and strips shrink to fit a short panel and grow to fill a tall one
  • Beat Grid scrolls instead of squashing pad rows when the panel is short
  • Muted tracks are greyed out - this also applies to tracks silenced by another track's solo
  • MIDI riffs and chords start on their first note - empty lead-in bars are removed when added
  • MIDI loops come out at clean lengths of 1, 2, 4 or 8 bars
  • MIDI riffs dropped on an instrument track leave out their drum part instead of playing drum hits as wrong notes
  • Tour and walkthrough cards sit right next to the feature they explain, with an arrow pointing at it
  • The session carries on when the host leaves - another player takes over
  • Leaving asks Save & leave, Leave without saving or Stay
  • Joining a session saves your own song to your projects first
  • Live sessions use less CPU - the song is only checked for changes after an edit, not 5 times a second
  • Store listing now shows Studio Box as 1-4 player co-op
  • The mouse wheel over a knob scrolls the panel unless you rest on the knob first
Fixed
  • Fixed a crash (IndexOutOfRangeException) in the delay effect
  • A missing sound file no longer floods the console with hundreds of warnings; the preview stops right away instead
  • Developer console commands no longer work in the published game, so other players can't rename your tracks or change your tempo
  • Fixed a leftover UI reference after leaving play mode
  • Browser no longer overlaps its own icons when the editor panel is made tall
  • Long sound names no longer run into the length or BPM label in the browser
  • Mixer track names showed as "..." - they now display properly
  • Status bar velocity now matches the velocity box
  • Tracks added during a session no longer disappear
  • Joining a session no longer mixes your old tracks into the host's song
  • A sound you play across the keys is now sent to friends in a session and included in share files
Removed
  • Removed an unused duplicate scene (mp.scene)
Known Issues
  • MIDI keyboards can't connect directly - s&box has no MIDI device support, so controller mode needs a key-mapper app (e.g. MidiKey2Key)
  • Controller mode plays every note at the on-screen velocity, and the controller's knobs and joystick don't do anything
  • MIDI import has only been tested with simple test files - files exported from other programs may split their parts differently
  • Join only lists sessions hosted by your Steam friends
  • Live sessions have only been tested on one PC so far, not between two players on different machines
  • Your saved kits and instruments stay on your PC - friends hear them in a session, but they aren't added to their own My Kits or My Instruments.
Hotfix 10/6/26 Oct 7, 2026
Fixed
  • Update – Piano Roll Crash Fixed
  • I noticed some players were running into errors and did a deep dive to track down the cause.
  • It turned out that moving a selection of notes that was wider than the current loop would crash the piano roll (and sometimes the whole tool). This could happen when:
  • Selecting a group of notes that spanned more time than the loop
  • Having a single note longer than the loop
  • Shortening the loop after notes were already placed
  • Dragging notes while the loop was shorter than the selection
  • The fix now checks whether the selection actually fits inside the loop first. If it doesn’t, the notes simply won’t move instead of crashing.
Known Issues
  • There are no known issues remaining with this update applied. Thanks for the reports and keep the tunes coming!
